Services from the Kingston council
Published 1 year, 10 months ago in Where I Live.As someone who takes the dog for a walk every night I find the biggest problem is overhanging branches and shrubs from people’s houses.
In frustration, I emailed the council - no reply. I then asked the mayor - as the City of Kingston have a “ask the mayor” section on their website. The mayor answered … although my question still remains unanswered.
Here is my question and the mayor’s reply.
Any ideas on how to proceed would be appreciated

Snap. That type of thing drives me nuts too. (I was toying with the idea of pruning the worst overhang in the dead of night - but decided to walk a different route instead). How about dropping a short, but polite note in the letter box of the property owner. Sometimes they don’t realise - and find a friendly “head up” might be welcome.
You would have to note the number and street name, then the council would act.
Hey, walk your dog with a pruner in your pocket.
Prune the over-hanging branch and put in the collection bin by the roadside.
You will be doing a social service to elderlies as well.
The Council cannot do every little thing at every place all the time !
I once saw a segment on ABC stateline a few years back that left my dumbfounded. A vision impaired person was having trouble with hedges overhanging the footpath. It was somewhere in Malvern or Armadale and the reporter interviewed the local residents and one of them said they didn’t think there were any blind people who lived their area so as far as they were concerned it wasn’t an issue.
They live in another world behind those hedges.
I agree with Trev. I wouldn’t know if my trees or branches are hanging over the footpath. A pleasant note in the letterbox would be most appreciated by the offenders. They are probably not aware. Be neighbourly and community minded. Sometimes we have other things on our minds and just need a little prompt.
The friendly heads up to a neighbor only works if you are able to find the neighbor to talk to. It’s not so much my neighbors in my street - it’s other streets in my surrounding neighborhood - I’m walking the dog at night - in the darkness - and having to duck & weave around branches.
